There is a particular confidence that comes with an artist no longer feeling the need to prove themselves. On her seventh studio album ‘Algorithm’, Natalie Imbruglia sounds liberated from expectation – and the result is arguably the most ambitious and creatively assured work of her career.
For an artist whose name will forever be associated with one of pop’s most enduring songs, Imbruglia has spent much of her career resisting the temptation to simply recreate the past. ‘Algorithm’ takes that instinct further than ever before. Sonically diverse and deliberately difficult to categorise, it finds her pushing beyond conventional pop to create something that feels unmistakably her own.
The understated opening of standout track ‘Sounds Like It Feels’ initially suggests an album willing to take its time, before building towards a lush crescendo and euphoric chorus. It’s an early indication of the scale of Imbruglia’s ambition. Then comes ‘Jesus on Mars’, a brash, almost in-your-face synth-pop bonanza that finds her at her most unapologetic musically.
That willingness to experiment is one of ‘Algorithm’s’ greatest strengths. ‘Breathe With the Fire Lola’ embraces trance-inspired production, its propulsive electronic pulse giving the track a hypnotic quality. Beneath it, however, lies something deeply personal: a call to action to remember yourself amid all the chaos and noise of the world around you.
Elsewhere, ‘Who Dimmed The Lights’ captures the yearning to find a sense of self again, while the dreamy pop of ‘Just Drive’ provides a softer counterpoint. Together, they demonstrate the breadth of an album that refuses to be confined by a single genre.
Calling ‘Algorithm’ a pure pop album feels limiting. Layered beats, electronic textures and unexpected production choices give the record a fluidity that makes genre labels feel increasingly irrelevant. Yet for all its experimentation, Imbruglia never allows the production to overwhelm the songs. Melody remains at the heart of everything.
The album’s heavyweight line-up of collaborators – including David Sneddon, Fraser. T Smith and Gary Lightbody – only reinforces its creative ambition. But ‘Algorithm’ never feels like a collection of outside influences imposed upon Imbruglia. Instead, they seem to have given her the space to explore an increasingly assured artistic identity.
That evolution is perhaps most apparent in her songwriting. These are deeply personal songs, but they rarely feel insular. Imbruglia has a knack for making vulnerability feel conversational, writing as though she is speaking directly to someone rather than performing for an audience. The result is intimate without being inaccessible, allowing the listener to recognise something of themselves in the uncertainty, desire, change and self-discovery at the heart of the record.
‘Algorithm’ takes that style of songwriting to new heights. Natalie sounds more willing to embrace ambiguity, atmosphere and restraint, while simultaneously allowing herself to be more adventurous musically. It is a combination that makes the LP feel both mature and genuinely exciting.
Most importantly, this isn’t experimentation for experimentation’s sake. Beneath the electronics and layered production are songs with real emotional weight. ‘Algorithm’ works because Imbruglia understands that sonic adventure means little without something worth saying.
Rather than looking backwards, she is expanding her musical vocabulary and refusing to be defined by the expectations attached to her past.
‘Algorithm’ is bold, personal and gloriously difficult to pin down. More than simply another chapter in Natalie Imbruglia’s career, it feels like a creative reset – the sound of an artist finally giving herself permission to follow the music wherever it leads.
And after all these years, that freedom sounds very good indeed.
